Aishwarya Rai - Miss World 1994

The lovely green eyed Miss world 1994, Aishwarya Rai popularly known as Ash was born on 1st November 1973 at Mangalore.

She participated in the Miss India Femina contest 1994 and became the Ist runner up which paved her way for winning the Miss world crown 1994. Aishwarya Rai's career took off as soon as she became 1994 Miss World.

It is intriguing to know that she was Miss India runner-up to fellow Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen who claimed the Miss Universe title the same year.

After clinching the title, Rai was quoted as ""Miss World 1994-95", an experience that has been enriching, enhancing and one that I shall truly treasure for a long time to come."

Aishwarya wanted to do medicine, but circumstances didn't let her. Instead she chose Architecture and passed the interview at Raheja College with flying colors. By this time, Aishwarya had started getting modelling assignments. She then decided to take a break from architecture and concentrate on modelling. From that point there was no looking back. Ash became a household name with the pepsi ad campaign. She was already a professional model when she came to represent her country on an international platform along with 86 other young girls from countries all over the world. And what more could one ask for than an audience with President Mandela himself, a man deservedly admired and respected the world over for his contributions towards humanity. She was quoted as saying "With the end of this dream-like period of a month with such special beautiful girls (many of whom have remained friends), began my life as Miss World."

Her world travels included many countries, each one being special, unique and memorable in its own way, attending glamourous evenings in France and Germany, or raising funds in London for the women and children in Bosnia, fashion shoots and shows in Amsterdam, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and visits to Houston, Jamaica and exotic countries like Bermuda and South Africa was a treat, attending a peace conference in Sri Lanka and the Telethon in Iowa through Variety International.

She also said, "The year also broadened my horizons in every sense, helping me to truly break free of the barriers set up by man, of nationalities, gender, age and status, and helped me evolve as a person. It has undoubtedly opened doors to many opportunities, but it has also given me tremendous confidence as this year has brought me closer in touch with myself. This has given me a clearer perspective, as I now look upon life as a world-person, and I am glad to be part of the Family, created solely by an experience like the Miss World Contest."

“Okay, let's take statistics. How many interviews have I given you in the last six years? Just five or six? Doesn't that say something? I hate to sound immodest, but this dates back to my personality since the age of 13. I've always got attention, which at times has been quite unwarranted.”
“Professionally, I'm on a roll. I have no doubts about the way my career has been going. I've never felt the need to name-drop or align myself with a particular project just to stay in the news. Regrettably, I've had to dissociate myself from quite a few projects.”

“I have a great story to tell... and I tell it well. No holds barred.”

For me, it was about being the 20-year-old girl from India on international platform and a lot of people actually would assume that I wasn't even educated in India because of the way I'd speak. And they'd be like, 'Have you studied in India? Do you actually speak English out there?' and, I was like, 'This is so interesting that so many people know so little about my country.' and this is exactly what I wanted to do when I set out on this little mission in my head.”

About Amazing Aish

Aishwarya Rai was born on November 1, 1973 in Manglore, Karnatka, India to a well off family. Her father is a marine engineer and her mother is a teacher, and they influenced Aishwarya to be more than just a pretty face. She excelled academically and studied architecture at Rachana Institute before turning her attention to modeling and acting

Aishwarya’s natural beauty was evident at a young age. Her flawless good looks, accentuated by her piercing blue-green eyes, led her to modeling jobs when she was still young. Her face has been seen on the covers of countless fashion and entertainment magazines including Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and Vanity Fair. She was also on the cover of time Magazine’s Asian publication as “the new face of film.”

Although many acting jobs were offered to her while still attending school, Aishwarya resisted the temptation and continued her studies. It wasn’t until after she won the Miss World pageant in 1994 that she began to seriously consider acting and started to accept some of the roles that were being literally handed to her.

Her feature film debut came in 1997 in India’s Iruvar. Since then she has appeared in over 30 movies. She’s won two Filmfare (India’s equivalent to the Oscars) awards in the best actress category – one for 1999’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and the other for 2002’s Devdas. Aishwarya’s popularity in her native country has also earned her honors in Zee Cine Awards, the Screen Weekly Awards, and the Awards of the International Indian Film Academy.

With her star firmly cemented in Bollywood, Aishwarya is on her way to shining in Hollywood. In 1994 she made her first English language film, Bride and Prejudice, a musical which retells the story of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Her performance was critically praised and well accepted by fans.

Her performance brought her to the attention of the American film industry and has landed her roles in films opposite major stars such as Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley. She continues to act in Bollywood films while branching out to Hollywood.

While Aishwarya is focusing on her acting career she continues to model. She’s a member of L’Oreal’s Dream Team and represents the cosmetic company worldwide.

Not one to simply reap the benefits of her fame, Aishwarya is using the advantages that stardom and the money that comes along with it bring to found the Aishwarya Rai Foundation. This charity is committed to giving relief to those affected by 2005’s tragic tsunami which ravaged the part of the world she calls home. Her foundation strives to meet the immediate needs of the victims as well as providing for their long term needs by building new homes and repairing fishing boats.

As Aishwarya continues her career, more and more people are taking notice. In 2004 she carried the Olympic flame through her native India. That same year Time Magazine named her one of Most 100 Most Influential People. With recognition like that and the attention of those in Hollywood, it won’t be long until Bollywood’s superstar becomes an international superstar.

Aishwarya Rai will not Quit Acting

A news to cheer for all the Aish lovers. The Bollwood Queen will not follow the conventional rules of marriage i.e. she will not give up her career in acting after tying knot with the Big B’s son Abhishek Bachchan. Though Amitabh adhered to the Indian culture and did not permit his wife and a versatile actress Jaya Bachchan to act in movies after they got married to each other, yet he is ready to violate this tradition for his Miss World, daughter-in-law, Aishwarya Rai. So Aish will not have to compromise her career for the sake of marriage. She is allowed to continue with acting the way she was doing prior to getting married to the young and charming, Abhishek. Amitabh Bachchan says “Jaya and I have insisted that Aishwarya must continue with her acting career. There is no problem or issue with us. They will live with us. This decision came voluntarily from both Abhishek and Aishwarya”. We can then perhaps say that Aish will have a complete ‘aish’.

It is said that the Bachchan mansion glittered with joy and festivity as the one of the most celebrated couple committed to join hands forever. Aish and Abhi do not have time for marriage

The Queen of Hearts, Aishwarya Rai and the heartthrob of millions of girls all round the world, Abhishek Bacchan have delayed their marriage for sometime. The reason that the couple has cited is the lack of time. Abhi and Aish got engaged in the month of January this year (2007). But since then they could settle on a date for their wedding because of the enormous workload. The father of Abhishek Bachachan, the versatile actor and the most renowned face of Hindi cinema, Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, told contactmusic that "Now Abhishek's schedule for (new movie) DRONA is postponed so I'm hoping we'll be able to sit down and work out a date. "But Aishwarya is in Karjat (India) shooting. Everyone is impatient. So are Aishwarya and Abhishek." But while he is keen to start wedding preparations, Bachchan Sr. already considers himself Rai's father-in-law. He adds, "The day Abhishek announced Aishwarya was the girl he was going to marry, she became a part of our family. I look on Aishwarya as a daughter."

Aishwarya Rai stuck with the Tree

The most talked about Bollywood beauty, the big-eyed charming girl who has many times proved her versatility in the world of Hindi cinema, Aishwarya Rai is undergoing a phase of tension nowadays. The reason for her worry is the lawsuit that she has been hit with for performing a banned ancient Hindu ceremony in which she spiritually tied knot with a tree. The would be daughter in law of the great Bacchhan empire and the former Miss World had agreed to undertake the ritual to overcome the expected troubles forecasted by astrologers in her married life. She believed that after getting married to a tree, the problems that could possibly hit her and Abhishel’s life after their marriage would not occur. According to astrologers in India because Rai is a manglik girl she must get married to a peepal tree before actually tying the nuptial bonds with the man of her dreams.

But the 33 year old queen of hearts has landed into trouble because she is now facing a civil lawsuit for practicing the ‘untouchability’ service. This is because her ceremony is associated with the caste system under which the Indian constitution violates such ceremonies as these are considered offensive to women. Aishwarya is sued by a lawyer in Patna, Shruti Singh. Shruti wants Rai and her family to issue an apology in public for her ‘false marriage’. However so far there are no comments either from Bacchan or Rai’s family over this matter.

The festival will be held for two full weeks in the two most beautiful cities of China- Shanghai and Beijing (the capital city). It will show ten different films in different Indian regional languages. This festival is a part of the ongoing ‘2006 India- China Friendship Year.

Hope Aish makes the best out of it!!

The World Queen turns Jhansi ki Rani

After playing some outstanding roles in blockbuster movies such as Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam, Bride and Prejudice, Khakee, etc. Aishwarya Rai will now for the very first time be playing a historical character of Rani Jhansi in Ketan Mehta’s upcoming film Jhansi ki Rani. This is Ketan’s second venture regarding a historical movie. His recent movie Mangal Pandey starring Aamir Khan did fairly well at the box office. About this female oriented historical project Ketan says “it is a common misconception abroad that Indian women are very soft and don’t have the courage to oppose anything. But my Jhansi Rani will prove beyond a doubt that Indian women are in no way inferior in courage to those outside India.” On his choice of Aishwarya Rai Ketan feels that Aish is ideal to play the Rani Jhansi role. He added “everyone is saying, but once you see the film after its release, you will be convinced that no one else would have suited the role better than Aishwarya Rai.”

When spoken to Aish about the film she said that she is really excited and enthusiastic about the movie because of the uniqueness of the role and also due to her past contender Sushmita Sen playing the same character in another movie.

Aishwarya Rai hates domestic violence

The Bollywood queen Aishwarya Rai had a nostalgic experience while working for her new movie on domestic violence. This is because the blue-eyed model turned actress got reminded of the violence she had confronted at the hand of her ex-boyfriend (Salman Khan) few years back. Her new film named ‘Provoked’ is a story of a Punjabi woman who kills her harassing husband and rebels against the verdict of the court which goes against her. Rai found the script quite interesting and close to her heart. The 32 year old beauty said that “we are all extremely aware of such violence and it is something I have experienced too. Aishwarya Rai's career

Rai debuted in Mani Ratnam's Tamil language film, Iruvar (1997) with Mohanlal.[1] She was introduced to Bollywood in the film, Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya with Bobby Deol as her co-star; the film was not a big hit on box office. However, her third project, a Tamil-language film, Jeans (1998) by S. Shankar was a critical and commercial success for which she was awarded the Filmfare Best Actress Award South. Aishwarya then appeared in many Bollywood films; a few successful films of her career include Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Taal (1999) for which her performance was lauded.[2] She was awarded the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her role in the former. In 2000 she had a supporting role in the hit film Mohabbatein and also in another hit film Josh. Her third and final to date, Tamil language project, Kandukondain Kandukondain won her positive reviews for her serious portrayal of her character, Meenakshi.

In 2002, Rai appeared with superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit in the lavishly produced Devdas, which was a major box-office success.[3] and earned her the Filmfare Best Actress Award.[4] The film attracted overseas attention as well, receiving a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival.[5] It was during this time that she garnered the attention of the West as an Indian actress and went on to appear in a few Hollywood projects.

As her name gained popularity in the West, she was chosen by Time magazine in 2004 as one of the World's "100 Most Influential People" and in 2003, appeared on the cover of Time magazine. She was the subject of a 60 Minutes profile on January 2. A month later she appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman. She was also featured on Oprah's "Women Across the Globe" segment. In 2003, she acted in the critically acclaimed and commercial success Bengali film, Chokher Bali, an adaptation of one of Rabindranath Tagore's novels by the same name.

Rai has been a regular at the Cannes Film Festival since 2002, and was a member of the Jury at Cannes in the year 2003. In October 2004, a wax figure of Rai became on display in London's Madame Tussaud's wax museum.[6] The same month, her first foreign film was released: Bride and Prejudice.[7] The film was an Indian version of Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice. The film did well commercially in the U.K but not in India. Her next overseas venture, The Mistress of Spices, was critically acclaimed though not commercially successful. She then appeared at the closing ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, as part of a performance showcasing Indian culture, on behalf of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, to be held in New Delhi. In between her overseas acting stints, she appeared in the Indian film Bunty Aur Babli in a hugely popular seven minute dance sequence for the song "Kajra Re".

At the end of the year 2006, she had two releases: Umrao Jaan and Dhoom 2. Umrao Jaan did poorly in India; however, her role in Dhoom 2, a sequel to the 2004 hit movie Dhoom brought her great attention. It was a hit commercially too.[8] 2007 saw the release of Mani Ratnam's Guru which premiered in Toronto. The film, based on the life of Indian businessman Dhirubhai Ambani, was critically acclaimed and a big box office hit.[9] Her most recent film, Provoked, based on the book "Circle of Light" where she portrays a real life character, was released on 6 April, 2007 in India and the UK. The film did well commercially in the UK. It was critically acclaimed all over the world. At the end of April 2007 her first American film, The Last Legion, was released in Russia and the Netherlands. The film opened in North American theaters in August 2007. Recently, she has signed up for The Pink Panther 2, which was declined by two other actresses, one of them recognised as Shilpa Shetty.

Aishwarya Rai's Biography

Her looks and talent made her a sure shot winner in the beauty pageants but faring equally well in films was a point to be debated. Would Aishwarya be able to deliver emotions, dialogues and dance with the same élan?

Ash's first film, 'Iruvar' (in Tamil) laid an expensive egg in the south. Ditto for Aur Pyar Ho Gaya and Jeans. But eventually, the girl with a million-dollar face combined with a strong personality and intelligence conquered Bollywood.

The debate concluded and went in Ash's favor. Almost all the happening directors and producers of Bollywood started booking her dates for their projects. The success of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Taal proved that she possessed and could deliver all that it takes to top the charts in Bollywood.

That has given an international edge to Ash's star status, something she enjoyed even with the Miss World title.

All this has done the inevitable to Ash's career graph. She has the major producers and directors chasing her for dates. Leading men in the industry send feelers to producers to cast them opposite her.
